Island Luffa by West Wind Farm
Island Luffa
Island Luffa turns homegrown luffa gourds into simple, durable cleaning tools for your kitchen, bathroom, and beyond. Plastic-free. Compostable. Grown and finished by hand on West Wind Farm in the Cowichan Valley.

Compostable, by you
When your luffa cloth or sponge is worn out, cut it up and toss it in your home compost. It breaks down like any other plant material.
Plant, not plastic
Luffa is the natural fibre inside a gourd. No petroleum, no microplastics - just plant xylem that returns to the soil when you’re done.
Tough, yet gentle
The open fibre structure makes luffa great at scrubbing without scratching most everyday surfaces, from dishes and sinks to tile and tubs.

Dish & Counter Cloth
For everyday sinks, dishes, and wipe-downs.

Surface Scrubber
For kitchen and bathroom scrub jobs.

Soap Dish Liner
Keeps your bar soap high and dry.

Grown on West Wind Farm
West Wind Farm sits in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, where careful greenhouse work and warm summer days make luffa possible in a coastal climate. We start by sowing luffa seeds in protected beds, then train the vines up sturdy trellises as they climb. When the gourds are fully mature, we harvest, dry, and process them by hand - peeling, washing, and cutting the fibre. The result is a simple, durable luffa cloth that reflects the work of the farm, not a factory.
Meet the Farmers
Island Luffa is grown and made by Wendy and Darren at West Wind Farm in the Cowichan Valley. They’ve spent years tending this land, growing food, raising animals, and now experimenting with luffa as a truly local, plant-based alternative to plastic sponges.Every Island Luffa product is cut, finished, and packed by hand on the farm, often with help from family and friends during peak season.

Luffas are tropical relatives of cucumbers and squash and grow on long vines. They require 8 mths to grow a crop here on Vancouver Island in a greenhouse. Although they can be eaten when up to 6" long, we let them mature for processing into cleaning products. Their xylem layer is what remains after all the skin, flesh and seeds have been removed and cleaned.Island Lufas are strong, long lasting and durable. After wetting they become soft and almost silicone-like in texture. They are grown and processed on West Wind Farm naturally, by hand using only spring water. This maintains their natural softness. Most commercial imported luffas are unbearably hard and stiff due to harsh bulk chemical treatments. Ours are a whole new experience. Our entire line is safe for dishes, glass, granite and tile countertops, sinks as well as boats and cars. Luffas can also be used in the bath and shower.
